What is dysphagia?

Dysphagia is a swallowing disorder characterized by difficulty moving food from the mouth to the stomach. Dysphagia symptoms may include:

  • Coughing after swallowing

  • Choking on food or liquids

  • The feeling of food stuck in the throat

  • Painful swallowing

  • Difficulty breathing when eating

Dysphagia is typically neurogenic, meaning it is the result of an injury to the nervous system, like a stroke, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, or Parkinson’s disease.

What to expect with VitalStim® therapy system

The VitalStim® therapy system is a non-invasive electrical stimulation therapy that uses an electrical current to stimulate the muscles responsible for swallowing.

This technology helps re-educate the muscles to help accelerate the recovery process by significantly increasing the swallowing function after a stroke or other neurological disorder.

At your first appointment at Delta Plus we will start with an evaluation and examine your swallowing to identify all the factors contributing to your condition. We will use this information to develop a comprehensive program to improve your swallowing and improve your overall function.

Our team uses techniques to help with communication, cognition, speech, language and swallowing. We also incorporate the VitalStim® therapy system if deemed appropriate for your condition and help us achieve the best possible outcomes! Speech therapy aims to develop new speech habits and restore any lost function.
